October 8, 2026
In Kenwick this October, the day of the week tells you where to go. From Monday through Friday, things happen at the Kenwick Community Center, a 1930 church building at 313 Owsley Avenue that the city now runs. The center is closed on weekends. Saturdays happen on National Avenue and East High Street. This year the two schedules meet on October 31, which falls on a Saturday.
The pattern is visible once the dates are laid side by side. It also explains why a Kenwick October feels so different from the citywide fall calendar.
The community center started out as something else. It opened in 1930 as the Kenwick Church of the Nazarene, and after the congregation left, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government bought it and turned it over to Lexington Parks & Recreation. Inside the one-story building and its basement are a pool table, a weight room, a library, a crafts room, a gaming and TV room, a gym with two nine-foot goals, a treadmill room and an esports room. There's a playground across the street and five parking spaces out front.
The center's posted hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday. The weekly calendar lists weekends as closed. That one detail shapes the whole month. Every special event the city has posted for Owsley Avenue this October falls on a weekday.
| Date | Day | Event | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 6 | Tuesday | Book Club | 4 – 6 p.m. |
| Oct. 9 | Friday | Family Game Night | 5 – 7 p.m. |
| Oct. 14 | Wednesday | Adult Painting: Glow in the Dark | 5 – 7 p.m. |
| Oct. 16 | Friday | D&D Night | 5 – 7 p.m. |
| Oct. 21 | Wednesday | Soap Making | 5 – 7 p.m. |
| Oct. 23 | Friday | Karaoke | 4 – 7 p.m. |
| Oct. 26 | Monday | Halloween Dance Costume Contest | 5 – 7 p.m. |
| Oct. 26 | Monday | HallowBingo | 5:30 – 7 p.m. |
| Oct. 30 | Friday | All Treats, No Tricks | 5 – 7 p.m. |
Four of those nights are Fridays. That makes the center the neighborhood's end-of-week stop just before the weekend shifts everything to the commercial blocks. The Halloween programming is all on weeknights too. The costume contest and HallowBingo share Monday, October 26, and All Treats, No Tricks takes the Friday evening before Halloween.
The regular weekly schedule continues underneath the special events. Adult Beginner Pickleball and Billiards run from 4 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday for ages 18 and up. On the same afternoons, Art Room with Debbie and the Game Room serve ages 6 to 16. The center also has an adult survey and a youth survey on its page asking what people want it to offer. So this weeknight calendar is the city's current answer to that question, and the city has asked to hear back.
Two notes before you plan around the table. The city's page has no update date, and its hours appear under a heading labeled "Summer hours." Call (859) 266-6405 before heading over, especially for the Halloween nights.
October follows a busy September on the same streets. The Kenwick Neighborhood Association's 2026 Bungalow Tour ran Sunday, September 20, from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets and maps were picked up at Victory Christian Church on Owsley Avenue. Six days later, the association's block party closed Cramer Avenue between Richmond and Owsley for an afternoon of local vendors in front of Wilson's.
So Owsley Avenue has two church buildings with very different roles. One was a departure point for a home tour, and the other is now a weekday recreation center. As of early October, the association's site doesn't list another event after the block party. That leaves this month's neighborhood programming mostly to the city's weeknight calendar and to the businesses at Kenwick's edges.
The commercial blocks on either side of the neighborhood work on the opposite schedule from the center. October 2026 has five Saturdays, and something nearby is scheduled for each one.
Wildfire Yoga's studio at 833 National Ave. now has a second reason to stop in. Matchang Matcha, a Filipino-inspired matcha café, opened inside the studio. Its limited fall drinks started August 30: Ube Pumpkin Matcha, Banana Bread Matcha and Biko Brown Sugar Matcha. Because the drinks are limited releases, check the café's Instagram for availability, as Smiley Pete's roundup advised.
The studio's one weeknight workshop this month falls on a Monday with no special event on the center's October list, although the center's regular Monday open gym, sports fitness and esports sessions still run. "Libra Healing & Astrology with Nishaan Sandhu" is set for Monday, October 12, at 6 p.m., and costs $37. A few doors down, the Lexington Farmers Market runs its Warehouse Block market at 737 National Ave. on Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting at 7 a.m. That puts it on the same days as adult pickleball on Owsley, just earlier. The market's listing doesn't give an end date for the season.
Witchfest is the biggest single Saturday on the month's calendar. VisitLEX's event listing describes it as a three-year tradition. Wick + Mortar Studio and Craft & Candle Cocktail Bar present the event. Wick + Mortar's Spell Bar will have lotions, potions and candles priced from $18 to $48. The full bar will serve Midnight Margaritas, with drinks typically priced between $6 and $12, including mocktails and a soda bar.
Several neighboring businesses are also part of the event:
Witchfest also has a costume contest, and it falls nine days before the community center's contest on October 26. That gives anyone in the neighborhood two chances to wear the same costume, one on a Saturday and one on a Monday.
The last full week of October is when the city's calendar, the center's calendar and the neighborhood's own edges all line up.
The city's Halloween Variety Show and Halloween & Thriller Parade are on Sunday, October 25. The Jack-o-lantern Trail runs October 27 through 30, and Yappy Hour: Howl-o-ween is on Wednesday, October 28. In the middle of all that, Owsley Avenue has its Monday costume contest and HallowBingo, then All Treats, No Tricks on Friday the 30th.
Then comes Saturday, October 31, the day the community center is closed. Wildfire's Halloween-themed kids class runs on National Avenue that morning from 9:30 to 10:30. The city lists Lexington Trick-or-Treat for the same day. As of October 3, though, the city hasn't posted trick-or-treat hours on its fall events page. Watch for that announcement before planning the evening. The Kenwick Community Center's "Treat or Trick" listing found online is the 2025 event, held on a Friday night, so it doesn't tell you anything about this year.
Put together, the October 2026 calendar looks like this. Weeknights belong to the 1930 building on Owsley Avenue. Saturdays belong to National Avenue and the Woodland Triangle. Halloween, landing on a Saturday this year, sends the whole neighborhood out onto its own sidewalks.
